Rocks and Minerals

In this unit we learned about identifying minerals, the rock cycle, and Superposition.
When identifying Minerals we looked for the color, Luster, Density, and Special Properties. Moh’s hardness scale (from 1-10) showed the difference between the softest mineral (Talcum) and the hardest mineral (a diamond). The rock cycle showed that all rocks were Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary at one time. Intrusive, Extrusive, Coarse grained, or Fined grained were how we categorized all these rocks. Then in superposition we learned how younger rocks were near the surface of the earth unless a fault, fold, or tilt occurred do to an earthquake. It was interesting in this unit to learn how long it turn to for rocks to form, how identifying minerals was not as simple as it looked, and how superposition could mix up all the layers of rock in such a short time.
